In our play therapy practice, we often use story to explore an area of concern with a child and to expand their awareness and coping mechanisms. It’s a gentle way to show them that they are not the only one experiencing that particular difficulty, that other people experience the same problem, they are not on their own in their struggle.
We believe that story can open a whole new world of possibility and awareness in a child and that the opportunity for a parent to create this experience for their child is limitless!
Story can capture our hearts, offer a sense of belonging and is a window into a new perspective. Children’s reference points are limited to their limited experience, so story can expand this endlessly. All children have small areas of concern at some stage and we hope that the attached book corner helps you to address this with them in a connected and nurturing way.
We have curated a bank of books with a range of specific concerns in mind, however dipping in and out randomly means you can address concerns proactively too through story and the conversation that unfolds.
Some children need to hear the same story over and over again, the predictability and familiarity of the story offering them a sense of safety, comfort and enhanced enjoyment.
Reading a story to a child or listening as they read is a space that can be so deeply connected, so wonderfully unique and comforting for you both that it is a shame not to enjoy as much as possible!
