Parenting is one of life’s greatest joys—but it can also be one of the most stressful, even at Christmas! What is advertised as the most wonderful time of the year can sometimes feel overwhelming as we prepare for the wonder of it….but it doesn’t have to be! From juggling work and family to managing the daily chaos, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed during the weeks in the run up to christmas. But what if you could hit “pause” on that stress, gain more control and become the connected, present parent your family needs? What if it all felt more relaxed and connected for you? Sounds good?
Preparation step 1
Firstly, take a moment to look at your calendar and realistically plan to do only what is going to feel relaxed and enjoyable for you and your little one(s). Focus less on how much you do and more on how your mood will be as you do it! The mood and feeling is what your child will remember, not the what and where. Avoid trying to do too much and get comfortable with saying no to things that will feel overwhelming for you.
Preparation step 2
Even with the best of intentions and planning, things can often feel stressful. So what can we do? The secret to a calmer, less overwhelming Christmas lies within you, you just need the tool to access it!
We believe that tool is mindfulness—a simple, science-backed ‘way of being’ that helps you regulate emotions, reframe challenges, expand your own capacity and create moments of peace even in the busiest days.
Why Mindfulness is a Game-Changer for Parents
Stress isn’t about what happens to you; it’s about how you respond to it. When your child throws a tantrum or your to-do list feels endless, your perception of the situation sets the tone for your reaction. Mindfulness gives you the tools to step back, take a breath, and respond with intention instead of reacting impulsively.
By practicing mindfulness, you tap into your brain’s “Wise Owl” (the prefrontal cortex) while calming your emotional “Guard Dog” (the amygdala). This creates space between a stressful moment and your response—allowing you to parent with patience, wisdom and connection.
The Power of Breath: Your Stress Reset Button
Breathing techniques are the cornerstone of mindfulness and they work wonders for parents on the go. Whether you’re managing a meltdown or recovering after a busy day, these techniques can help you reset in minutes:
The following techniques were developed by Peter Bliss of Business is Bliss.
- Vodka Breath: For immediate relief when you’re tense or overwhelmed, try this: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds through your nose.
- Water Breath: Perfect for maintaining calm throughout the day. Inhale and exhale through your nose for 5 seconds each while gently moving your head side to side or up and down.
- Coffee Breath: Boost your energy with 10 short, sharp exhales through the nose.
Give them a go! With practice they really do work wonders and over time you start to feel more connected ‘in the moment’ of overwhelm.
Stress is Feedback—Not the Enemy
Stress is often seen as bad, but it’s actually a signal from your body telling you to pay attention!
Instead of avoiding it, mindfulness helps you notice and acknowledge it.
Ask yourself: What’s my perception of this challenge? What story am I telling myself? Recognizing stress as purposeful feedback empowers you to adapt and grow, rather than feel stuck or defeated.
